In 2016, Alan went to Calais to photograph the community of migrants seeking to clandestinely board ferries bound for Dover. They were hoping to find a better life in the land he had once called “home“. Indeed, Alan left the UK with his family in 1990 to go to live in France. Departing from Dover, their ferry headed to Calais. The migrants’ camp was being evacuated by the French police over the course of several days. Underlying the photos that he took during this episode was Alan's own experience of being uprooted. The images of the evacuation are therefore the starting point of a much larger ongoing project, inspired by his personal history of emigration.
